Famous Opening Sequences

As soon as it starts, the film company is introduced: 20th Century Fox. Their website states that their movies speaks to your imagination by crafting great stories, creating indelible characters and pushing the boundaries of film making with technological advances. This is created by an immediate soothing, calm music but the high pitched tone adds a but of mystery to it. The type of music also clashes with the dark house which would suit gloomy and dull music. The text is very modern and unusual with the colour being very basic but stands out due to the contrast on dark background. The title also moves just like scissors do which hints to the title. A door which looks very derelict is shown. This portrays a very dark, gothic theme. The target audience is more for the mature and older people because you can tell it is a very meaningful film that has a mature message to it. A pair of hands appear which links closely to the title 'Scissorhands'. It also only features a lifeless old man. With this man being the only person featured, it could mean he plays a big part in this film. A large house is shown a hill. This gives us an immediate feel if loneliness and exclusion as a big theme or relevance to the main character.

There is minimal noise but just a constant sound of an engine like noise. At the beginning the title is shown in a very basic but modern text which portrays a futuristic feel. There is complete darkness and a voice of an old woman talking about her father being a farmer. The way she talks about the past tells us that it will be a film based on the past hen the woman was younger. There is a show of crops being thrashed about by strong winds along with the sharp sound of lightening which lets us get familiar with the settings. We then focus on a spacecraft with a man in it. It hints immediately that he will be one of the main characters. Scenes change very quickly in time to show that it was a dream that the man was having. His daughter comes in and talks about ghosts - which the man is familiar with which hints that a certain presence is vacant throughout. Music is loudened and becomes an all around sound. A repetition of 'dust' and 'dirty' and how people were protecting theirselves from it which gives is very intreating.

Sound is the first thing to become present. It immediately informs the audience of the theme. We are introduced to the main character because the start of it is focuses on a woman as if it is someones eye-line. It is quite perverted as the angle is very focused and the music that goes along with it is creepy. The company credit are in white bold font which is small. The first actor is introduces so we can become familiar with the character. We can ell the two main characters have a strong love relationship. The rest of the characters are blurred because they are just filling a gap and are not important. All the text being the same. there is also dialogue of a man talking about the past which hinders to us that something happened in the past and we are going to be shown when it wet 'wrong'.

The film producer is the first thing we see which is Walt Disney Pictures. The film company also appears in a basic and simple font which is easily recognisable for the audience which tells us that the target audience is young. From this part into the actual start of the film, it fades from dark blue to a light blue which is very magical. It is all animated and the dialogue is coming from a very young boy which are both very relevant for the target audience. It is set in his bedroom which is very comforting. The character/toy, Woody, appears in the scene with very western and adventure music. This captivates and excites the audience. The way the characters names are all said also helps the audience get involved and will help them to understand. 'You've Got a Friend In Me' is played which represents innocence and youth

Film company is made clear at the beginning which is‎ Warner Bros Pictures. This tells us that it is going to be a mature film as they produce films with mature themes. The effect of total silence adds tension. All that is on the screen is the world and they way they have angled is that only a little bit of it is show which portrays the massive-ness of the world which is overpowering. It comes up with background so they contextulise about the conditions in space which helps our understanding for the characters. It goes from quiet to loud very quickly. This quick rise of an echoing sound is a very spacey and sets the scene perfectly and the pace adds mystery. It is made obvious that it is about space because of the space craft and astronauts floating around. One astronaut is communicating with NASA from Earth. There is a quiet sound of very chilled out, Southern American music which tells us where they are from or are based. The title is a different font and is more spaced out which fits with the genre of space.

The title is shown on a notepad written by someone. It goes straight into dialogue of a black middle aged American woman and a white - American‎ woman. There are questions being asked by the white woman to the black woman about her life being a maid for whites. We straight away get the feeling that this was set in the time of when black women were made to be maids and work in white households. They way they contextulise is key because of the mature theme. Both of their accents are Southern which hints to states which were segregated in 50's/60's. The black woman is portrayed as being very vunerable. Soft colours and music are shown and played.

There is immediate sound and a show of a ship. There is sound of water and creaking which is very dark and stalking. You can tell it is going to be a quite dark film because of the dull colours. The next thing that it focuses on is a young girl singing which shows vunerablility. The cameta angle is coming from the point of view of someone coming up behind her. The gasp is very sharp and pearcing. Other characters accents are different which shows the different class. Mysterious music is played when a lifeless boy on a bit of wreck sails by the ship. This makes it very mysterious and intreeging. It goes from past to present because it was a dream. The change in colours reflects the change in mood and type of situation it is now.

Silence is a thing that is present throughout the opening scene. It adds tension and makes every sound very piercing. We see a teenage girl in a kitchen. The shows that she is the main character. The way the television turns on with a fuzzy sound is shows to be unusual because of the girl's reaction. The way she just stops and turns to look where the sound is coming from adds mystery. The angle of the camera is very close to her face which focuses on her and her fear. The camera also moves along just as if it was somebody's eyes. The use of dark and bland colours reflects a serious and morbid feeling. Its pathetic fallacy that it is raining and windy outside as it reflects the dark and dangerous mood. There is dialogue about a sibling which suggests that there is another character going to be involved. Everything is very slow which builds up tension. The angle is from the floor focusing on the unexplainable water. It then speeds up and zooms into the television screen showing a week and then back to the girl screaming. It then quickly flashes showing images.

Dialogue is immediate and is a soft voice which is soothing. The character is animated so you can tell it will have a target audience of young children. The use of dark to light is reassuring and informs us that it is not a dark film. The magical sounds captivate you and it comes interesting. The main character is made obvious because he is the only one featured. The character is very recognisable due to the association with frost. Even thought it is animated, the film producers have put the camera at angles in which it feels like you are there.

The film company is the first thing we see, which is Warne Bros Pictures. The sound of drums starts to play along with a famous quote. The sets up the mature theme of the film. The text is very formal  and bland which fits the serious film. The title is very big and readable. An old broadcast is then played which reflects it is a film based on history of someone very important. It gives background information on the main character. It also shows a lot of things from America at that time in history.

Learning Comment:

By doing this task I have become aware of many codes and conventions of film openings.  In my own film opening I must ensure that I;

  • Name the main actors
  • Have appropriate credits - director, actor, producer, sound editors
  • A title - using appropriate text
