Storyboarding and Shot Lists

Learning comment:

The storyboard was quite tricky. we had to make sure we included everything to make sure the narrative was explicit tough for our audience to understand. We also had to consider the different shots because we didn't want to use the same one constantly because it would of made it boring and wouldn't of grabbed the audience's attention. We put the text in each scene but later on thought it would be better if it was on a separate screen. The shot lists helped us see clearly what things were shown with which shot and also where the dialogue was to be put. The both aided the production of the film immensely because it was clear and easily producible when filming.

Typography

For the text in my film, I want to use something that is soft on the edges whilst also being bold enough to present some of the themes of the film. This is a very hard thing to do as most of the time people do not pay attention to the font the text is in, nevertheless the font still has some sort of impact on the audience so it needs to be done correctly and thought over properly.

This font is good because of the sharp edges yet the simplicity of the bold letters seems to overshadow the edges, this might be able to work with my scene but I believe I would like something smoother for my final font.

This font is much thinner than the first one, I believe that the letters will be better thinner, this is because the fact that the letters being thinner will not make the background seem lesser/ overshadow the detail of the background.

This font is very good , the thin lines match with the genre or images presented in my film, though I do believe that the sharp edges are too sharp and seem to overpower the thin lines.

Whilst I believe that the text/ font here is very innocent I also believe that the letters are too immature for the genre and type of film I am presenting.

I firstly thought that this font might be good for the film as it is very soft and comical, after looking at it or an elongated amount I time I have decided that I do not like this font, I believe the change in letter thickness and tilt presented a much to comical film.

I HAVE DECIDED TO GO FOR A DIFFERENT TYPE OF TEXT. THE PREVIOUS TEXT'S WERE TOO SIMOKE AND DIDN'T PORTRAY ANY FEMINISM OR PAIN.

This type of text is very elegant I like the thin text and the way it looks scribbled on a piece of paper, this text will be good for my film as the genre of the film would fit well with this feminine text, this will then appeal to my target audience. This one is elegant but it is no that clear and the font doesn't show the audience there is sadness.

This text is good because it suits the target audience of my film. I don't like how it looks like it has been done with brush and the text isn't that clear.
It has a moderately thin width and it would look good with the genre of my film. It will also suit my target audience as it suits the very feminine feeling of my film.

This is my favourite. It is bold, which hits towards the minor theme of death. It isn't too bold and in your face because it seams quite feminine.

This is one of my favourites because I like the simplicity of it. This text is very good, it is in fact one of my favourites, i am very fond of the thickness of the text whilst the text is very smooth, this will be very suitable for the genre and target audience of my film, the feminine edges and thickness will suit my film and its background.

this font is very good, i like the way the text is very informal, it makes it look much more like it s handwritten, this will also suit the genre of my film

This style of handwritten fonts is much more suitable to use in my scene because of the target audience and the genre of my film. This handwritten style is much more attractive as there are no bold blocky letters and sharp edges.

Learning comment:

We have decided to use this text because it is looks like writing in a diary where personal thoughts, feelings and events are written down. The way the font is formed with some capitals and lower cases lets the audience think about her age and education and what something could be effect her writing like this. It is quite feminine because of the soft edges.

Sound

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/better-days
I like this one because ti is very slow and there are random high bits. It seams very interesting but very mindful music. this one would be good because of the drone like noise

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/slow-motion
I like the piano notes in this one because they are very piercing but the music is very sad and reflective and would go with my narrative.

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/november      (Potential final soundtrack.)
This one is very lonely and gentle. There isn't always music being played which is good, because it will allow our audience to reflect on what is happening.

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/tomorrow
this one is a bit more happier but the guitar music is very earthly and very moving which helps us reflect and understand the character and her feelings.

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/piano-moment
This one isn't my favourite because the pace of it is very fast and it too happy for our film. What i like about it is that the piano notes are very immediate and piercing.

http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/track/once-again
This sound is very fast pacing but quite upbeat. It has a sense of impedance but i do not like it when it gets mire uni the song and begins to feel very upbeat and happy.

These potential sound tracks are in the general genre that I want for my film. I like the slower ones as because it gives a much more dramatic feeling to the film and this will suit my film's themes and imagery. My favourite so far is the track called 'November' and this is because the slow start is exactly what I want for my film.

Learning comment:

We had to cancer our audience and the character. We needed to make sure it wad relevant to who our character was and her situation but we also had to think we could appeal to our audience. w done this through eh use of using a iPhone as a prop because the majority of teenagers use their phones on a daily bass and they know the importance of it.

Draft & Final Script

This is the initial idea for my script, this is the premature idea.
This is not the final idea and will not be the final script.

The is my final script.

We have changed what the doctor calls her treatment. We have changed it to Fusion Inhibitor.

Learning comment:

We knew our idea and who we wanted to structure it. We had an idea of who was to be heard in the opening scene. When we had that it was to be the Doctor and Quinn's Mum speaking, we had to think carefully about they were going to say. This was quite simple because we just needed to develop the mood a bit more because there was no other noise but the music. We had to make sure her Mum sounded distressed and was pleading hewer to come home. This was to hint to the audience about the narrative and let them think in more depth about what was happening and what will happen in the future

Audience Profile

My coming of age film, what with it being a drama, will typically be using the target audience that includes many of the younger generation. My coming of age film will use certain techniques to attract and entice the younger generation to take the time to view my film.

Primary audience- This will be mostly teens of age 11-20. This is solely because of the maturity of my film, some of the themes presented are not suitable for the children or early teens. This is because some of the children might find the themes I am presenting too mature for them to understand.
Here is one example of the primary audience being teens for typical coming of age films.

Secondary Audience- My secondary audience will mostly be parents taking their children to watch my film. These will mostly consist of the older generation, however some adults may choose to watch my film of their own free will becuase of the fact that my film will be presenting mature themes that may attract a wider audience and older audience.

The gender of my target audience will be mostly girls and this is because of the genre of the film. Typically the male population will stay away from films within the drama  and coming of age genre, and this may be because the male population may be bored by the images and themes within my film, though this is playing to the stereotypical males and their film choices.

The general age of the population that will be viewing my film are teenagers and young adults, aged 11-20, this is again because of the genres and themes presented throughout my film. The most mature themes and images in my film will most probably keep the younger population away from my film and this will impact my films rating and the ending popularity.

The general social class of my film will be people from the working class to the middle class, this is once again because of the themes and genres of my film, it may also be due to the fact that some of the images presented in my film will only be applicable to people of the lower class and the middle class, things such as the lack of money and this will not be applicable to the higher class population and meand they cannot relate to the characters.

This was the original actress, Madeleine.

We have decided to use my sister, Izzy, because we later found out Madeleine is not free. This is a great opportunity for us because my parents know how important it is for us to film her, which means she will not be able to say no.

We have changed our actor again to my friend Ella because Izzy is also busy. Ella is definitely free this Saturday for filming and she is completely happy and comfortable with it.

We later found out that Ella was ill Saturday, but my sister is free Sunday.

Learning comment:

We had to consider our audience and what kind of character would be appropriate. Coming of age films are filmed on teenagers so the only age of our potential actor/actress would be in teenage years. We had decided to use an actress so it was just a case of finding somebody. The character profile was very important because the film was going to revolve around this girl. Explicit information about Quinn was important because it allowed use to understand the character in depth so make sure she went with he narrative and also would appeal to the target audience. We had some trouble getting an actress, but in the end we used to sister, Izzy. This proved t be good because she was very cooperative and listened to what we were saying on our filming day.

Final Idea

Planning comments:

The only character shown is Quinn Teegan. She has incurable illness which means she needs essential medical treatment around the clock. She has had enough of it and cannot carry on. Sub-genre's are thriller and drama. The name of our film is 'Escaping from myself' because it is mysterious but has strong links to teenagers trying to find themselves. The age certificate is 12A. We thought this was appropriate because of mature themes of suicidal thoughts which younger views might find distressing. There is only one location, which is in Severn Beach, on a bridge over the motorway. The actress will be wearing very plain clothes that don't have much value to them and look like she doesn't care what she looks like. We will hint towards the narrative of her of thinking about killing herself, which is shown by her keep looking at the bridge and also ending the opening with 'I'm sorry mum'.

Audience Research

Analysis of Audience Research and the connections and repetitions between certain genres and their audience.

Submarine -
Richard Ayoade's film 'submarine' was a massive success in the box office, it achieved the highest UK pre-screen figures of any film since its release in 2010, the films cinema showings had increased from being shown in 59 countries to a massive 100.

As you can tell this film was a massive success, here is a breakdown of the rating for the show and the amount of people who watched it and their gender and age
As we see the gender breakdown shows us that the amount of females is practically the same as the amount of males. This may have been because of the films genre or even because of Richard Ayoade's prominent stature in the film industry.
We also see that the age for the people that watched and voted for the film is much higher than expected, which may also be due to the genre or nature of the film as although it is about a teenager, it has some very mature and serious ideologies running throughout the entirety of the film.
I cannot find anything to do with these peoples social class but I believe from watching the film that because of the audience it is aimed at, the film would most probably have been watched by more working-middle class individuals. The film confronts some ideologies to do with a working class lifestyle and that may appeal more to working class citizens, because they can more easily relate to the film and the themes it is presenting.

Easy A -
Will Gluck's film 'Easy A' was a comedic masterpiece and was enjoyed by many people, not just individuals located in the directors target audience. The film tackled the life of everyday students and the dilemmas they face throughout their academic life.

The film 'Easy A' is highly regarded amounts film critics, I myself believe the film was a great representation of how a child's academic life is not as great as schools make them out to be. The facade that schools create is just a front to mask the terrible intentions of some, if not most of the students and even some of the teachers. The film exaggerates the separation between high-school students even though they go through school together.
This gender and age breakdown show us that many more females had given the movie a higher rating, even though less of them have voted on the film, this may be due to the fact that the protagonist of the story is a strong willed females, intending on escaping the confines of school life and making her mark on the way out, We also see from these ratings that more people enjoyed the film that were an age over 18 and above, this may be because people of that age may be able to relate to the film, seeing as they may be going through the exact same thing at the moment.
The target social class of the viewers was spot on with who viewed the movie. The film was aimed at more middle-class individuals and that is exaggerated by the ideologies of the film and the themes that connect the whole movie together.

The perks of being a wallflower -
Stephen Chibsky's 2012 film 'the perks of being a wallflower' is both a literary and cinema masterpiece. The film presents the viewer with some every strong and mature images but it still manages to come across as a film aimed at younger people.

'The perks of being a wallflower' is an amazing film that tackles the ideals of a teenagers life and how difficult and mentally straining it is to grow up and pass that stage into adulthood. The film follows a boy with a mental illness as he attempts to confront his demons. He then meets a girl, who, to her oblivious attitudes, has not realized that the boy has begun to fall deeply in love with her. The boy is sort of a caricature as it represents all teens struggles as they 'come of age'.
As we can see the film was rated slightly higher by females. I would not base this down to any certain detail, except for the fact that females are generally stereotyped as much more sympathetic than males and therefor will care much more for his character but that is just my inference, not solid fact. I can also see that individuals aged 19-29 rated the film much higher. This will be because the target market was selected so that the characters can understand the more mature themes of the film whilst still being able to relate to the characters.
The target social class of the audience is quite frankly a more broad one. I do not believe the film was aimed at any one social class as it can be related to by any individual and does not require a certain social class to be understood and related to. This is a very good idea as a much more diverse audience gets to enjoy the film and that means much more money and profit for the film companies producing this film.

Learning comments:

This task helped us get an insight into the popularity of coming of age films. We looked into depth about the ratings of some films and what aspects of them, like their class or age, would hinder them watching coming of age films. We also found out that females rated coming of age films higher than men did. These women were of all ages from under 18 to over 45. This gives us a clearer understanding of the majority of our potential audience. The critics show that the rating for coming of age films are very high.

We waiting a reasonable amount of time for people to take survey to make it as accurate as possible so the information would be precise which would help us for our opening scene. Overall, we have learnt that the information we gathered from the survey to broaden our understanding of what our target audience looks for in films and try and bring it all together to create something everyone would love. This was a good idea to do this research because it let us get an insight into what my target audience likes and helped me make some initial ideas solid or advise me how to adapt them.

Representation in films

Learning comments:
Social groups are represent in many different ways. The use of costume and also the way the camera focuses on each clothing item highlights how they are trying to be represented. This is essential because it could portray either certain characters characteristics, situation or mood. The setting is also very relevant because we situate teenagers in certain settings. I found that they most appear in comfortable settings like their bedrooms or school where they are typically found. When edited fast, this shows aspects of chaos or also something being rushed as if it is trying to be hidden.

Preliminary Task

180 degree rule- you don't go over the 180 degree line when filming. This can make it look like the characters are looking at each other and engaging in conversation.

Shot/Reverse Shot- a technique used to make it look like the characters are looking at each other. POV shots or over the shoulder shots are used typically in this.

Match on action: editing technique for continuing editing in which a show cuts to another shot portraying the action in the first shot

Learning comment:
By making this video I have a better understanding of planning, filming and editing. We made a story board of what we were going to do. This helped us develop an idea of the space we needed and also dialogue which was easy but effective. I could express what I wanted to do through pictures which saved time and also made it clear to my group members. We filmed on the tripod which ensured that the camera wasn't moving about. I need to use the tripod in the video because it is a lot easier and is clear for the audience to see. However, the lighting was bad as it was shining from behind which made it hard to see the characters facial expressions. The sound was echoing because of the setting. This made me think about setting that I should exclude. In the editing stage, uploading onto the computers and then cutting it on iMovie was easy because all we had to do was put it together in he right order.
